オバマ大統領、同性婚の支持を表明。

何年にもわたって私が友人や家族そして近しい人に話していたことだが、非常に献身的な(同性愛)関係にあるスタッフ、同性でも一緒に子供を育てているスタッフの事を思うとき、また私を代表して戦い、しかし「Don’t Ask Don’t Tell 」が廃止されても結婚できないためになお抑圧を感じている兵士たちの事を思うとき、私は言わなければならない。

ある時期をもって、私の個人的な意見として、さらに前へ進み、同性カップルが結婚できるようにならなければならないと断言することが重要であるとの結論に至った。

“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage.
At a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said in an interview with ABC News.

アメリカのオバマ大統領がABCニュースのインタビューで正式に同性婚を支持する発言をしました。従来、LGBT支持ではあるけど同性婚には消極的立場(シビルユニオンでいいとする考え)であったオバマ大統領の発言は大きな転換点になるのではないでしょうか。

一方で、共和党候補のRomnyはこれを受け、「結婚は男女間に制限されなければならない」趣旨の発言をしました。これで同性婚は、今年行われる次期大統領選挙の1つの重要なテーマとなったといえます。

今後も引き続き注目していきたいと思います。
